 1-4                                     of
 1-5                            Robert Wayne Ethridge
 1-6           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
 1-7     citizens of Coahoma in mourning the loss of one of the city's
 1-8     most esteemed and well-loved educators, Robert Wayne Ethridge,
 1-9     who died March 24, 2001, at the age of 71; and
1-10           WHEREAS, The many important achievements of this
1-11     distinguished gentleman contributed immeasurably to the
1-12     development and progress of the Coahoma Independent School
1-13     District and the Howard County Junior College District; and
1-14           WHEREAS, The native Texan was born March 22, 1930, in Abbott
1-15     to Pat and Weeta Ethridge; an exceptional athlete, Rob Ethridge
1-16     entered Southern Methodist University in 1948 on a football
1-17     scholarship; his pursuit of higher education was interrupted in
1-18     1949 when he answered the call to serve his country as a member of
1-19     the United States Army; honorably discharged in 1952, he returned
1-20     to Dallas to complete a degree in business marketing; and
1-21           WHEREAS, In 1966 Mr. Ethridge received his master's of
 2-1     education degree from Sul Ross State University; the teacher,
 2-2     coach, assistant principal, principal, and Howard County Junior
 2-3     College District trustee dedicated 29 years of his life to the
 2-4     educational well-being of the young people of his community; and
 2-5           WHEREAS, Throughout his adult life Mr. Ethridge worked
 2-6     diligently to uphold the dignity of his profession; his
 2-7     involvements included the Texas State Teachers Association,
 2-8     the Permian Basin Secondary School Administrators, the Texas
 2-9     Association of Secondary School Principals, the National
2-10     Association of Secondary School Principals, the Howard County
2-11     Teachers' Association, Phi Delta Kappa Honor Society, the Red Rose
2-12     Administrators Society, and the Retired Teachers Association; and
2-13           WHEREAS, Active in civic organizations devoted to the
2-14     improvement of Coahoma, he actively participated in the Coahoma
2-15     Lions Club and was honored by fellow members of the Howard County
2-16     4-H Adult Leaders' Association with an Outstanding Adult Leader
2-17     award; and
2-18           WHEREAS, The devout Christian was a member of First Baptist
2-19     Church of Coahoma and believed wholeheartedly in practicing his
2-20     faith in his daily life; and
2-21           WHEREAS, Few have given so freely of their time and energies
2-22     as this exceptional gentleman; he was valued and loved by all who
2-23     knew him, and his presence will be deeply missed; now, therefore,
2-24     be it
 3-1           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 3-2     77th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to
 3-3     the bereaved family of Robert Wayne Ethridge:  his beloved
 3-4     wife, Marie Petty Ethridge; his daughter and son-in-law,
 3-5     Robin Kim and Byron Harris; his brother and sister-in-law,
 3-6     Joe Paul and Velma Ethridge; his mother-in-law, Dorothy Fowler;
 3-7     and his granddaughters, Heather and Holli Harris; and, be it
 3-8     further
 3-9           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
3-10     members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from
3-11     the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it
3-12     do so in memory of Robert Wayne Ethridge.
