1-1 ****** NEED TWO-PAGE HEADER ****** 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 880 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to 1-4 recognize residents of the Greater Channel Area on the occasion 1-5 of their participation in the 50th Annual National Day of Prayer; 1-6 and 1-7 WHEREAS, On Thursday, May 3, 2001, citizens across the 1-8 country will gather to pray on behalf of our nation and its 1-9 leaders; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Civic prayers and national days of prayer have a 1-11 long and enduring history in the United States and date back to 1-12 the First Continental Congress in 1775; on March 30, 1863, 1-13 President Lincoln proclaimed a National Fast Day; and 1-14 WHEREAS, Congress passed a joint resolution in 1952, 1-15 signed by President Harry Truman, which officially established 1-16 an annual National Day of Prayer; and 1-17 WHEREAS, On this the 50th Annual National Day of Prayer, 1-18 religious and civic leaders across the nation plan to hold 1-19 prayer vigils and celebrations in churches and other meeting 1-20 areas; in the Greater Channel Area, an early morning prayer 1-21 service will be held at 7:00 a.m. at the Alvin D. Baggett 1-22 Community Center in Galena Park; and 2-1 WHEREAS, Thousands in Texas and throughout the nation 2-2 believe in the power of prayer and its importance in our society; 2-3 on May 3, 2001, citizens will have the opportunity to reflect on 2-4 our moral and religious heritage, meditate on the challenges and 2-5 needs our country will face in the new millennium, and express 2-6 gratitude for the many blessings our nation has enjoyed; now, 2-7 therefore, be it 2-8 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-9 77th Legislature, recognize the Greater Channel Area and its 2-10 commitment to prayer; and, be it further 2-11 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared to 2-12 express the high regard the Texas Senate holds for this important 2-13 occasion. 2-14 Gallegos 2-15 ______________________________________ 2-16 President of the Senate 2-17 I hereby certify that the above 2-18 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-19 on May 2, 2001. 2-20 ______________________________________ 2-21 Secretary of the Senate 2-22 ______________________________________ 2-23 Member, Texas Senate
