 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 883
 1-3           WHEREAS, The fifth annual celebration of Space Day is
 1-4     being held on May 3, 2001, and this occasion is indeed a splendid
 1-5     way to celebrate America's extraordinary achievements in space
 1-6     exploration and to advance math, science, and technology education;
 1-7     and
 1-8           WHEREAS, The culmination of the year-round Embrace Space
 1-9     educational endeavor, Space Day is supported by more than 65
1-10     education, government, and youth organizations, as well as school
1-11     districts and leading cable, technology, and aerospace companies;
1-12     and
1-13           WHEREAS, This year's celebration is focusing on living
1-14     and working in space, and there are a host of national, state,
1-15     and regional activities that are a part of this educational
1-16     initiative; these activities include Design Challenges for
1-17     students in grades four through six, a Global Classroom for
1-18     children to interact and share ideas, a Cyber Space Day Webcast,
1-19     and a Signatures in Space Program, which affords students from
1-20     500 schools the opportunity to sign a poster that will be flown
1-21     into space on the space shuttle; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, Schools, museums, and other venues across the
 2-2     nation and in Canada are hosting Space Day celebrations, ranging
 2-3     from rocket launches to space exhibits to astronaut visits, and
 2-4     the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum is the site of the
 2-5     official opening ceremony; and
 2-6           WHEREAS, Thousands of children, teachers, parents, and
 2-7     people from around the nation and the world will participate in
 2-8     this year's Space Day activities, and it is truly a privilege to
 2-9     commemorate this exciting and educational event at this time; now,
2-10     therefore, be it
2-11           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-12     77th Legislature, hereby recognize Space Day on May 3, 2001, and
2-13     extend to all those associated with the occasion sincere best
2-14     wishes for an enjoyable and rewarding day.
