1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 937 1-3 WHEREAS, Virginia Goodrow of Palestine is most deserving 1-4 of special legislative recognition as she retires from the 1-5 Anderson County Historical Commission after 14 years of dedicated 1-6 service; and 1-7 WHEREAS, An Anderson County native, Mrs. Goodrow has been 1-8 chair of the Anderson County Historical Commission since 1987, 1-9 when she became only the fourth person to hold that post since the 1-10 commission was founded in 1957; in this capacity, she has overseen 1-11 many substantial changes within the commission and has helped the 1-12 county acquire 60 historical markers, including 26 that are on the 1-13 National Register of Historic Places and six private markers; and 1-14 WHEREAS, During her first year as chair, she co-presented 1-15 a paper on "Indian Trails, Early Roads and Ferry Crossings of 1-16 Anderson County" for the Texas State Historical Commission 1-17 Convention; since that time, Mrs. Goodrow has brought a number 1-18 of noteworthy projects to fruition, and her efforts have included 1-19 the creation of a map showing the location of historical markers 1-20 and tour routes and the completion of a project in conjunction 1-21 with Trinity Valley Community College that lists the location of 1-22 166 cemeteries; and 2-1 WHEREAS, She has also greatly benefited countless 2-2 individuals and organizations, providing assistance with the 2-3 formation of the Friends of the Howard House and direction to the 2-4 East Texas Museum of Culture regarding state grant money for 2-5 building improvement; in addition, Mrs. Goodrow has aided the 2-6 Palestine Preservation Commission with its Texas Certified Local 2-7 Government and Main Street Project, assisted with tourism and 2-8 development, and shared historical information with the Palestine 2-9 Chamber of Commerce; and 2-10 WHEREAS, Moreover, she helped lead the county's 2-11 sesquicentennial birthday celebration in 1996 and provided 2-12 leadership during the relocation of the Anderson County 2-13 Historical Commission's headquarters to the Federal Building 2-14 in 1991; and 2-15 WHEREAS, This civic-minded woman has been active with 2-16 Howard House Museum, Harvey Woman's Club, DAR Retired Teacher's 2-17 Association, the Anderson County Genealogical Society, and the 2-18 National Trust for Historic Preservation, among others; and 2-19 WHEREAS, Mrs. Goodrow's remarkable tenure as chair of 2-20 the Anderson County Historical Commission has been invaluable to 2-21 the preservation of the history of her beloved hometown and the 2-22 surrounding area, and it is a privilege to commend her for her 2-23 significant efforts; now, therefore, be it 2-24 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 3-1 77th Legislature, hereby pay tribute to Virginia Goodrow for her 3-2 exceptional contributions as chair of the Anderson County 3-3 Historical Commission and extend to her sincere best wishes 3-4 for continued success and happiness; and, be it further 3-5 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be 3-6 prepared for Mrs. Goodrow as an expression of high regard from 3-7 the Texas Senate. 3-8 Staples 3-9 ______________________________________ 3-10 President of the Senate 3-11 I hereby certify that the above 3-12 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-13 on May 4, 2001. 3-14 ______________________________________ 3-15 Secretary of the Senate 3-16 ______________________________________ 3-17 Member, Texas Senate
