1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 958 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to 1-4 recognize San Lorenzo de la Santa Cruz, Inc., the Nueces Canyon 1-5 Chamber of Commerce, the City of Camp Wood, and the Lipan Apache 1-6 Band of Texas for their preservation and reconstruction of the 1-7 Mission San Lorenzo de la Santa Cruz in an effort to revitalize 1-8 the Camp Wood, Texas, area; and 1-9 WHEREAS, In 1754, Alonso Giraldo de Torres established the 1-10 Mission San Lorenzo de la Santa Cruz for the Lipan Apaches in an 1-11 effort to convert them religiously; and 1-12 WHEREAS, The Spanish Colonial government built the Mission 1-13 San Lorenzo de la Cruz for the Lipan Apaches in 1762 at present 1-14 day Camp Wood, located in Real County, Texas; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Once the Mission San Lorenzo de la Santa Cruz was 1-16 established, several Lipan Apache Bands visited it, but only one 1-17 band of more than 300 actually settled at the mission; and 1-18 WHEREAS, While many Native American tribes eventually became 1-19 displaced and assimilated in the 18th and 19th centuries, the Lipan 1-20 Apaches of today continue to practice their proud rituals and 1-21 traditions; and 2-1 WHEREAS, Descendants of the Lipan Apache, now known as the 2-2 Lipan Apache Band of Texas, have endured and continue to practice 2-3 and interpret their tribal customs and traditions and celebrate 2-4 time-honored occasions, such as the Nueces Canyon Chamber of 2-5 Commerce's Old Settlers' Reunion, and they also use ceremonial 2-6 music and dress as ways of upholding tribal customs; in addition, 2-7 renewed efforts to ascertain more knowledge about their ancestry 2-8 are ongoing; and 2-9 WHEREAS, The Lipan Apaches, who have played an integral part 2-10 in Texas' development, and who were the first Texans, have greatly 2-11 enriched our shared heritage with their culture; and 2-12 WHEREAS, The dedication and service of San Lorenzo 2-13 de la Santa Cruz, Inc., the Nueces Canyon Chamber of Commerce, 2-14 the City of Camp Wood, and the Lipan Apache Band of Texas in 2-15 preserving a valuable perspective of life on the Texas frontier 2-16 are unique; now, therefore, be it 2-17 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-18 77th Legislature, hereby recognize San Lorenzo de la Santa Cruz, 2-19 Inc., the Nueces Canyon Chamber of Commerce, the City of Camp Wood, 2-20 and the Lipan Apache Band of Texas for their reconstruction of 2-21 Mission San Lorenzo de la Cruz and the many contributions they 2-22 have made to the rich history of Texas; and, be it further 2-23 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-24 San Lorenzo de la Santa Cruz, Inc., the Nueces Canyon Chamber 3-1 of Commerce, the City of Camp Wood, and the Lipan Apache Band of 3-2 Texas, as an expression of high esteem from the Texas Senate. 3-3 Madla 3-4 ______________________________________ 3-5 President of the Senate 3-6 I hereby certify that the above 3-7 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-8 on May 8, 2001. 3-9 ______________________________________ 3-10 Secretary of the Senate 3-11 ______________________________________ 3-12 Member, Texas Senate
