1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 964 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to 1-4 recognize James E. Madison High School in the Houston Independent 1-5 School District on the grand occasion of its 35th anniversary; and 1-6 WHEREAS, On September 8, 1965, the school opened its doors 1-7 to 2,003 students as Madison Junior/Senior High School; two years 1-8 later, enrollment had so escalated that Dowling Middle School 1-9 opened and Madison began serving only upper level students as a 1-10 senior high school; in 1981, ninth grade was added to the school; 1-11 and 1-12 WHEREAS, The year 1995 was a pivotal year in Madison High 1-13 School's history, as at that time it became a magnet school for 1-14 Meteorology and Space Science in partnership with Channel 2 in 1-15 Houston; the school has also received assistance from General 1-16 Electric, which supplied a $250,000 grant for a College Bound 1-17 program; and 1-18 WHEREAS, Over the years, Madison High School has enjoyed 1-19 the expert leadership from the men and women who have served 1-20 her as principal; past principals are: Arthur D. Herring, who 1-21 served from 1965 through 1974; Carrie R. McAfee, who served from 1-22 1974 through 1989; Ada T. Cooper, who served from 1989 through 1-23 1992; and Warner D. Ervin, who served from 1992 through 2000; and 1-24 WHEREAS, Madison High School is especially proud of its 2-1 current principal, Gloria J. Legington, who assumed her duties 2-2 in 2000; she brings to the position 31 years of experience in 2-3 education, all of them at Madison High School; and 2-4 WHEREAS, The many honors Madison High School has received 2-5 over the years and the success of its alumni affirm the school's 2-6 commitment to excellence; most recently, the school's College 2-7 Bound program has been highly successful in encouraging and 2-8 assisting Madison High School students to continue their 2-9 education past high school; and 2-10 WHEREAS, For 35 years, the faculty, staff, and 2-11 administrators at Madison High School have daily worked to 2-12 produce informed, thoughtful, and well-rounded Texans, and 2-13 this venerable institution is to be commended for giving 2-14 young people the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and 2-15 skills needed to make positive contributions to society and 2-16 to lead productive, fulfilling lives; now, therefore, be it 2-17 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-18 77th Legislature, hereby commend Madison High School on the 2-19 occasion of its 35th anniversary and express a sincere thank you 2-20 to the school's teachers, staff, and administrators for their 2-21 valuable efforts; and, be it further 2-22 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the 2-23 students of Madison High School as a memento of this notable day 2-24 in their school's history. 2-25 Ellis 2-26 ______________________________________ 2-27 President of the Senate 3-1 I hereby certify that the above 3-2 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-3 on May 8, 2001. 3-4 ______________________________________ 3-5 Secretary of the Senate 3-6 ______________________________________ 3-7 Member, Texas Senate
