 1-4                                     of
 1-5                          Arthur A. Seeligson, Jr.
 1-6           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
 1-7     citizens of San Antonio in mourning the death of a beloved citizen,
 1-8     Arthur A. Seeligson, Jr., who died April 17, 2001, at age 80; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, Born into a distinguished San Antonio family,
1-10     Mr. Seeligson lived in Texas from his birth in 1920 until his
1-11     family moved to Oklahoma in 1930; and
1-12           WHEREAS, Mr. Seeligson attended Phillips Exeter Academy and
1-13     Yale University before embarking on a highly successful career in
1-14     the oil and gas business; and
1-15           WHEREAS, Throughout his life, Mr. Seeligson would be known
1-16     for the diversity of his interests and for the enthusiasm with
1-17     which he pursued them; an avid hunter, fisherman, backgammon
1-18     player, and a connoisseur of fine wines, he was particularly
1-19     passionate about horse racing; and
1-20           WHEREAS, Mr. Seeligson owned and bred thoroughbreds for over
 2-1     40 years, and the crowning achievement of his lifelong involvement
 2-2     in thoroughbred racing came in 1975, when his horse Avatar won the
 2-3     Belmont Stakes; his enthusiasm for the sport led him to co-chair the
 2-4     statewide campaign for pari-mutuel wagering in Texas in 1967; and
 2-5           WHEREAS, A steadfast conservative, Mr. Seeligson also had
 2-6     an endless fascination with politics; he twice served as a
 2-7     delegate at the Republican National Conventions of 1952 and 1976,
 2-8     where he supported General Eisenhower and Governor Ronald Reagan
 2-9     respectively; and
2-10           WHEREAS, In addition to his pastimes, Mr. Seeligson held
2-11     directorships on the boards of the National Bank of Commerce
2-12     (San Antonio), the Crane Company, and Cambridge Royalty Company;
2-13     and
2-14           WHEREAS, Mr. Seeligson was appointed an associate of the
2-15     national Board of Smithsonian Associates and served on the boards
2-16     of The University of Texas Marine Science Institute and Saint Mary's
2-17     Hall in San Antonio; he also served as a trustee of the Phillips
2-18     Exeter Academy for several years and took an active interest in its
2-19     direction; and
2-20           WHEREAS, Noted for his unique sense of humor and enthusiasm
2-21     for living, Mr. Seeligson had a host of close friends in this
2-22     country and around the world; all who had the privilege of knowing
2-23     this distinctive soul will cherish their memories of him; and
2-24           WHEREAS, Texas is proud to call Arthur Seeligson its native
 3-1     son; a man who achieved great success in life and who dedicated
 3-2     himself to many worthy causes, institutions, and endeavors, he
 3-3     lived life well; now, therefore, be it
 3-4           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 3-5     77th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to
 3-6     the family of Arthur A. Seeligson, Jr.:  his wife,
 3-7     Linda Nixon Seeligson; his children, Ramona Seeligson Bass,
 3-8     Juliana Seeligson, and Arthur Addison Seeligson III; his
 3-9     son-in-law, Lee Marshall Bass; his daughter-in-law,
3-10     Carson Trapnell Seeligson; and his four grandchildren,
3-11     Sophie Seeligson Bass, Perry Richardson Bass II,
3-12     Ramona Frates Bass, and Sinclair Baker Seeligson; and,
3-13     be it further
3-14           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as
3-15     an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, and
3-16     that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
3-17     Arthur A. Seeligson, Jr.
