 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 994
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride
 1-4     in recognizing Sara Cecilia Galvan on her recent selection as
 1-5     a 2001 Rhodes Scholar; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, The Rhodes Scholarship Trust announced in
 1-7     December of 2000 the names of 32 Americans chosen from 950
 1-8     applicants to be Rhodes Scholars; the oldest of international
 1-9     study awards available to American students, Rhodes Scholarships
1-10     were created in 1902 by the will of Cecil Rhodes, a British
1-11     philanthropist and colonial pioneer; and
1-12           WHEREAS, Rhodes Scholarships provide two or three years of
1-13     study at the University of Oxford in England; candidates are first
1-14     endorsed by their university and are then nominated by Committees
1-15     of Selection in each of the states and interviewed by District
1-16     Selection Committees in eight regions of the United States; and
1-17           WHEREAS, Applicants are chosen on the basis of criteria
1-18     designated by Cecil Rhodes; his criteria included high academic
1-19     achievement, integrity, a spirit of unselfishness, respect for
1-20     others, potential for leadership, and physical vigor; candidates
1-21     are expected to be of high moral character and to have a strong
1-22     sense of public duty; and
1-23           WHEREAS, Sara Galvan is in the School of Architecture and
 2-1     Plan II degree program at The University of Texas at Austin and
 2-2     is currently working for the Texas Legislature in the office of
 2-3     Senator Eddie Lucio; in honor of her achievements and those of
 2-4     her fellow University of Texas recipients of Rhodes Scholarships,
 2-5     the Tower at the university was lit on April 27, 2001; and
 2-6           WHEREAS, Talented and hardworking, Sara is a model for
 2-7     students of all ages in the State of Texas; and
 2-8           WHEREAS, An exemplary young lady with an engaging personality,
 2-9     Sara strives for excellence in all of her endeavors and is a source
2-10     of much pride to her family, her school, and her community; now,
2-11     therefore, be it
2-12           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-13     77th Legislature, hereby commend Sara Cecilia Galvan for her
2-14     outstanding personal and academic accomplishments and extend
2-15     congratulations to her on earning the coveted and prestigious
2-16     Rhodes Scholarship; and, be it further
2-17           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her
2-18     as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
