 1-2                         SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1020
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased
 1-4     to recognize The Village Republican Women's Club on the grand
 1-5     occasion of its 40th Anniversary celebration, which takes place
 1-6     May 23, 2001, at the Lakeside Country Club in Houston; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, Established in March of 1961, the club received
 1-8     its charter from the Texas Federation of Republican Women and
 1-9     became known as The Village Republican Women's Club in November of
1-10     1972; its charter members were a dedicated group who focused on
1-11     recruiting conservative Democrats for Republican Party causes; and
1-12           WHEREAS, Since its inception, The Village Republican
1-13     Women's Club has worked hard to contribute money to campaign
1-14     funds, distribute campaign literature, manage phone banks, and
1-15     host forums to promote the Republican philosophy; and
1-16           WHEREAS, At the club's first meeting, 14 members were
1-17     present, and today, the membership is over 100; in the early days,
1-18     the club hosted barbecues to help raise funds for such candidates
1-19     as Senator John Tower; other events have included tamale parties,
1-20     Mexican fiestas, city bus tours, garage sales, and a Bottle Party;
1-21     and
1-22           WHEREAS, In addition to fund-raising, the club has
 2-1     contributed significantly to the Houston community by helping with
 2-2     such causes as the Florence Critterdon Home for young mothers and
 2-3     Cancer Awareness Weeks; its members have distributed magazines and
 2-4     books to retirement homes and hospitals and have worked with a
 2-5     Reading is Fun program at a Spring Branch School; and
 2-6           WHEREAS, Over the last 40 years, several of the club members
 2-7     have served as officers in the Texas Federation of Republican
 2-8     Women, two were named in a group of 10 Top Outstanding Republican
 2-9     Women in Texas, and a number have served as campaign chairs for
2-10     candidates seeking elected offices; now, therefore, be it
2-11           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-12     77th Legislature, hereby commend the members of The Village
2-13     Republican Women's Club on their dedication and many
2-14     accomplishments and extend congratulations to them on the joyous
2-15     occasion of their 40th Anniversary; and, be it further
2-16           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-17     The Village Republican Women's Club as an expression of esteem
2-18     from the Texas Senate.
