1-1 ****** NEED TWO-PAGE HEADER ****** 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1038 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in 1-4 recognizing the Tap Pilam-Coahuiltecan Nation for its distinguished 1-5 history in the Lone Star State and its contributions to our country; 1-6 and 1-7 WHEREAS, The Coahuiltecan tribe was encountered by the 1-8 Spanish explorers in North America in the late 1600s, when 1-9 tribe members had seasonal attachments to their campgrounds and 1-10 relied on their hunting and gathering skills to survive; and 1-11 WHEREAS, During the early 1700s, a number of Native American 1-12 groups were converted to Christianity, and members of the 1-13 Coahuiltecan tribe and other groups performed important duties at 1-14 the missions, such as constructing dams and irrigation canals, 1-15 working in the fields and as cowboys, and helping to build 1-16 communities; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Unlike the traditions of many Native American 1-18 tribes, the proud rituals and traditions of the Coahuiltecans 1-19 have endured, and many aspects of the tribe's early life remain 1-20 the same today; time-honored occasions, such as Indian Decoration 2-1 Day, are still celebrated, and ceremonial music and dress are 2-2 still in use; and 2-3 WHEREAS, The Coahuiltecans have played an important role in 2-4 Texas history, and they have enriched our culture by preserving 2-5 and sharing their heritage and customs; now, therefore, be it 2-6 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-7 77th Legislature, hereby commend the Tap Pilam-Coahuiltecans 2-8 for their exemplary preservation of their heritage and their 2-9 many contributions to the culture of our state and nation; and, 2-10 be it further 2-11 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the 2-12 Tap Pilam-Coahuiltecan Nation as an expression of esteem from the 2-13 Texas Senate. 2-14 Zaffirini 2-15 ______________________________________ 2-16 President of the Senate 2-17 I hereby certify that the above 2-18 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-19 on May 11, 2001. 2-20 ______________________________________ 2-21 Secretary of the Senate 2-22 ______________________________________ 2-23 Member, Texas Senate
