 1-4                                     of
 1-5                            Charles Schreiner III
 1-6           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins
 1-7     the citizens of Central Texas in mourning the loss of
 1-8     Charles "Charlie" Schreiner III, who died April 22, 2001, at
 1-9     the age of 74; and
1-10           WHEREAS, Born January 6, 1927, in San Antonio,
1-11     Charlie Schreiner attended San Antonio Academy, the Schreiner
1-12     Institute in Kerrville, and Texas Military Institute; he earned
1-13     a bachelor of arts degree from The University of Texas at Austin
1-14     in 1947; and
1-15           WHEREAS, Mr. Schreiner's grandfather was Captain
1-16     Charles Schreiner, a Texas Ranger, and Charlie was a historian
1-17     who devoted much of his time to studying and preserving Texas
1-18     Ranger memorabilia; and
1-19           WHEREAS, Charlie Schreiner was dedicated to his work
1-20     as manager of the Y.O. Ranch from 1949 to 1976; he continued
1-21     to live on the ranch and was active in numerous Central Texas
 2-1     organizations throughout his life; he was predeceased by his son,
 2-2     Louis Schreiner II; and
 2-3           WHEREAS, An exemplary gentleman, Charlie was respected
 2-4     and beloved for his many accomplishments and his engaging
 2-5     personality; he was a legendary Hill Country figure who was
 2-6     known for his signature hat, as well as for his myriad interests
 2-7     and talents; and
 2-8           WHEREAS, Charlie was president of the 12,000-member Texas
 2-9     Sheep and Goat Raisers Association in 1960, and in 1964, he
2-10     founded the Texas Longhorn Breeders Association, which now has
2-11     2,000 members in 48 states and Canada; he also founded the Exotic
2-12     Wildlife Association, which is comprised of 600 members who are
2-13     devoted to raising exotic wildlife and hoofstock; and
2-14           WHEREAS, A well-known civic leader, Charlie served on the
2-15     board of directors of the Lower Colorado River Authority from
2-16     1974 to 1980; he was a longtime board member of the First Federal
2-17     Savings and Loan Association, Frost National Bank in San Antonio,
2-18     Schreiner Bancshares in Kerrville, Southwest National Bank in
2-19     Austin, Ingram State Bank, and First National Bank in Boerne; and
2-20           WHEREAS, A man of integrity, strength, and generosity, he
2-21     gave unselfishly of his time to others, and his wisdom, warmth,
2-22     and valued counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew him;
2-23     and
 3-1           WHEREAS, Charlie Schreiner lived his life to the fullest
 3-2     and was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and he leaves
 3-3     behind memories that will be treasured forever by his family and
 3-4     many friends; now, therefore, be it
 3-5           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 3-6     77th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to
 3-7     the bereaved family of Charles Schreiner III:  his wife,
 3-8     Karol Schreiner; his sons and daughters-in-law,
 3-9     Charles Schreiner IV and Mary Helen, Walter R. Schreiner and
3-10     Teri, Gus L. Schreiner and Lori, and Chrisie Schreiner; his
3-11     stepdaughter and her husband, Deborah James and Marty; and his
3-12     11 grandchildren; and, be it further
3-13           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3-14     the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy
3-15     from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this
3-16     day, it do so in memory of Charlie Schreiner.
