 1-2                         SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1091
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is extremely proud
 1-4     to recognize the 3rd Annual El Veterano Conjunto Jam and to honor
 1-5     the life of a tremendous Texas talent and United States Army
 1-6     veteran Eligio Roque Escobar; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, The Annual El Veterano Conjunto Jam was started
 1-8     by the family of the well-known South Texas composer and musician
 1-9     Eligio Escobar, who died on October 4, 1994; and
1-10           WHEREAS, Born December 1, 1926, in Ben Bolt, Jim Wells
1-11     County, Eligio Escobar was himself a veteran; in February, 1945,
1-12     he joined the United States Army and served until October, 1946,
1-13     achieving the rank of sergeant; and
1-14           WHEREAS, After his military service, Eligio returned to the
1-15     Ben Bolt area and worked as an oilfield truck driver; in 1960,
1-16     after an automobile accident left him bedridden, Eligio began to
1-17     play the guitar, and it was during his year-long convalescence
1-18     that he developed his Texas-Mexican conjunto music; and
1-19           WHEREAS, Eligio began recording music in 1962, and although
1-20     he sang in both English and Spanish, he became most familiar to
1-21     Spanish-language radio listeners; and
1-22           WHEREAS, His songs "Cuando Dos Almas," "Rosario Nocturno,"
1-23     and "El Gambler" earned Eligio tremendous popularity, but he was
1-24     best-known for his song "El Veterano," which spoke to the feelings
 2-1     of the Mexican-American veteran of World War II; and
 2-2           WHEREAS, A talented musician, Eligio Roque made valuable
 2-3     and lasting contributions to the musical heritage of Texas, and
 2-4     he leaves a legacy of over 250 recorded songs; and
 2-5           WHEREAS, For his efforts to remember the Mexican-American
 2-6     men who fought so bravely to defend our nation in World War II,
 2-7     it is indeed fitting to hold the annual El Veterano Conjunto Jam
 2-8     Festival in honor of Eligio Escobar; now, therefore, be it
 2-9           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-10     77th Legislature, hereby honor the memory of Eligio Roque Escobar
2-11     and extend its best wishes to the organizers and participants of
2-12     the 3rd Annual El Veterano Conjunto Jam Festival for a most
2-13     successful event; and, be it further
2-14           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
2-15     family of Eligio Roque Escobar:  his wife, Jesusa K. Escobar; his
2-16     daughters, Jesusita E. Gonzalez and Linda Escobar; and his sons,
2-17     Eligio Escobar, Jr. and Victor Daniel Escobar, as an expression
2-18     of high regard from the Texas Senate.
