1-1 ****** NEED TWO-PAGE HEADER ****** 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1102 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great 1-4 pleasure in recognizing Don Melendez for his outstanding work 1-5 as a member of the Sun Bowl Association; and 1-6 WHEREAS, The Sun Bowl is a long-standing tradition in 1-7 El Paso, which began New Year's Day in 1935, when an El Paso 1-8 high school all-star team defeated a team from Ranger, Texas; 1-9 and 1-10 WHEREAS, The game was originally played to raise funds 1-11 for improvements to the El Paso High School stadium and to 1-12 help underprivileged children; the next year, however, the 1-13 event featured college football teams; and 1-14 WHEREAS, Today, the Sun Bowl is one of the oldest bowls 1-15 in the nation, and CBS Sports will broadcast the 2001 game 1-16 for the 34th consecutive year; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Don Melendez is a native El Pasoan; he holds a 1-18 bachelor of business administration degree in finance from 1-19 The University of Texas at Austin and has also served in the 1-20 United States Marine Corps; and 1-21 WHEREAS, Don holds the position as executive vice president 1-22 and chief operating officer at Wells Fargo Bank; he has served 2-1 the Sun Bowl Association as the 1999-2000 president and as the 2-2 1997-1998 executive vice president; and 2-3 WHEREAS, The El Paso Collaborative for Community and 2-4 Economic Development, the board of Project Amistad of the 2-5 League of United Latin American Citizens, and the Chamber of 2-6 Commerce Government Legislative Committee are but three examples 2-7 of the many other community organizations which Don serves; and 2-8 WHEREAS, Don Melendez has played a vital role in carrying 2-9 on the grand occasion of El Paso's Sun Bowl games; for his 2-10 generous work on behalf of the Sun Bowl Association and for his 2-11 commitment to his community, he is worthy of legislative 2-12 commendation; now, therefore, be it 2-13 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-14 77th Legislature, hereby recognize Don Melendez for his valuable 2-15 contributions to the Sun Bowl Association; and, be it further 2-16 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-17 him as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate. 2-18 Shapleigh 2-19 ______________________________________ 2-20 President of the Senate 2-21 I hereby certify that the above 2-22 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-23 on May 18, 2001. 2-24 ______________________________________ 2-25 Secretary of the Senate 2-26 ______________________________________ 2-27 Member, Texas Senate
