1-1 ****** NEED TWO-PAGE HEADER ****** 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1114 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great 1-4 pleasure in recognizing Bernie Olivas for his outstanding work 1-5 as President of the Sun Bowl Association for 2000-2001; and 1-6 WHEREAS, The Sun Bowl is a longstanding tradition in El Paso, 1-7 which began New Year's Day in 1935, when an El Paso high school 1-8 all-star team defeated a team from Ranger, Texas; and 1-9 WHEREAS, The game was originally played to raise funds for 1-10 improvements to the El Paso High School stadium and to help 1-11 underprivileged children; the next year, however, the event 1-12 featured college football teams; and 1-13 WHEREAS, Today, the Sun Bowl is one of the oldest bowls in 1-14 the nation, and CBS Sports will broadcast the 2001 game for the 1-15 34th consecutive year; and 1-16 WHEREAS, Bernie Olivas is a native El Pasoan who has been 1-17 involved with the Sun Bowl Association for 19 years; a graduate 1-18 of Cathedral High School, he earned his bachelor's degree in 1976 1-19 from The University of Texas at El Paso, where he was a member of 1-20 the football team; and 2-1 WHEREAS, Bernie, who currently works as a health science 2-2 advisor for Merck, has been a board member of the Sun Bowl 2-3 Association since 1992; as the 66th President of the Sun Bowl 2-4 Association for 2000-2001, he has played a vital role in carrying 2-5 on the grand occasion of El Paso's Sun Bowl games; now, therefore, 2-6 be it 2-7 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-8 77th Legislature, hereby commend Bernie Olivas for his valuable 2-9 contributions as President of the Sun Bowl Association; and, be 2-10 it further 2-11 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him 2-12 as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate. 2-13 Shapleigh 2-14 ______________________________________ 2-15 President of the Senate 2-16 I hereby certify that the above 2-17 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-18 on May 21, 2001. 2-19 ______________________________________ 2-20 Secretary of the Senate 2-21 ______________________________________ 2-22 Member, Texas Senate
