 1-4                                     of
 1-5                               W. Truett Smith
 1-6           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
 1-7     of San Angelo in mourning the loss of W. Truett Smith, who died
 1-8     on April 29, 2001, at the age of 83; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, A native Texan, Truett was born in Laredo on
1-10     October 22, 1917; after his father died when Truett was a teenager,
1-11     he helped support his mother; and
1-12           WHEREAS, Proud to serve his country during World War II,
1-13     Mr. Smith was a medic in the United States Army in Europe and was
1-14     awarded two Silver Stars and two Bronze Stars; assisted by the G.I.
1-15     bill, he attended The University of Texas at Austin; and
1-16           WHEREAS, Truett Smith married Sunny Sulak of Laredo in
1-17     July, 1946; after he graduated from law school in 1949, he
1-18     and Sunny chose San Angelo as the ideal spot to establish a home,
1-19     a family, and a law practice; and
1-20           WHEREAS, A founding member and senior partner of Smith,
1-21     Rose, Finley, Harp, and Price, Mr. Smith practiced law in
1-22     San Angelo for over 51 years; he enjoyed his work too much to
 2-1     ever retire; and
 2-2           WHEREAS, A prominent attorney, Truett Smith had served as
 2-3     chairman of the State Commission on Judicial Conduct, as president
 2-4     of the Tom Green County Bar Association, and as fellow of the Texas
 2-5     Bar Foundation; in 1983 he appeared before the U.S. Supreme Court,
 2-6     representing Irien County landowners, and the court ruled 5-4 in
 2-7     favor of the landowners in a landmark decision; and
 2-8           WHEREAS, Respected for his integrity, compassion, and
 2-9     generous spirit, Truett Smith was known throughout West Texas
2-10     for putting his clients' interests before his own; he will be
2-11     greatly missed by his family, his friends, and his colleagues;
2-12     now, therefore, be it
2-13           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-14     77th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to his
2-15     family:  his children, Pat Esslinger, Dr. Truett Smith, Jr.,
2-16     Debbie Smith, Corky Smith, and Stevie Smith; and his two
2-17     grandsons; and, be it further
2-18           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-19     his family as an expression of deepest sympathy, and that when the
2-20     Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of W. Truett Smith.
