 1-3           WHEREAS, The United States has always been a country of
 1-4     regions with places defined by landscapes and natural resources;
 1-5     by the stories about its founding and its original residents; by
 1-6     its histories over the years since they first took shape; by
 1-7     religious beliefs and institutions; by diversity of ethnic identity
 1-8     and gender roles; by languages, art, music, literature, and film;
 1-9     and by its architecture and construction; and
1-10           WHEREAS, Thoughtful engagement with the varied experiences
1-11     of heritage and place can bring together longtime residents and new
1-12     arrivals to examine a region's past and to imagine its future; and
1-13           WHEREAS, The study of regions offers Americans access to
1-14     rich repositories of cultural resources with which to understand
1-15     their sense of place; and
1-16           WHEREAS, Currently, there is a special competition by the
1-17     National Endowment for the Humanities to create 10 Regional
1-18     Humanities Centers, where American traditions, cultures, and
1-19     aspirations can be explored in the context of place; and
1-20           WHEREAS, Southwest Texas State University in
 2-1     San Marcos, Texas, has been selected to compete to become the
 2-2     Southwest Regional Humanities Center; now, therefore, be it
 2-3           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 2-4     77th Legislature, hereby vigorously support the selection of
 2-5     Southwest Texas State University as the Southwest Regional
 2-6     Humanities Center by the National Endowment for the Humanities
 2-7     and fully endorse its application to become the regional center
 2-8     responsible for extending the understanding of place throughout
 2-9     the Southwest.
