1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1129 1-3 In Memory 1-4 of 1-5 Charles Alan Wright 1-6 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins citizens 1-7 across the state in mourning the loss of Charles Alan Wright, 1-8 an internationally renowned expert on constitutional law and 1-9 the federal courts, who died July 7, 2000; and 1-10 WHEREAS, A native of Philadelphia, Professor Wright was born 1-11 September 3, 1927; after graduating from high school at 16, he 1-12 enrolled in Wesleyan University and finished his bachelor's 1-13 degree in two years; and 1-14 WHEREAS, An alumnus of Yale Law School, Professor Wright 1-15 began his distinguished teaching career at the University of 1-16 Minnesota in 1950, and five years later, he joined the faculty 1-17 of The University of Texas Law School; and 1-18 WHEREAS, While at The University of Texas Law School, 1-19 Professor Wright held the Charles T. McCormick Professorship, 1-20 the William B. Bates Chair for the Administration of Justice, 1-21 the Hayden W. Head Regents Chair In Excellence, and the 2-1 Vinson and Elkins Law Chair; he was the first holder of the 2-2 Charles Alan Wright Chair in Federal Courts, which was created 2-3 by donations from his friends and former students; and 2-4 WHEREAS, During his career, Professor Wright argued 13 cases 2-5 before the United States Supreme Court, winning 11; additionally, 2-6 he argued many cases in courts of appeal and the state supreme 2-7 court; and 2-8 WHEREAS, A gifted legal scholar, Professor Wright completed 2-9 a prodigious amount of work during his career; both his Cases 2-10 on Federal Courts and Wright on Federal Courts are heavily 2-11 relied upon by practitioners, judges, and academics; and 2-12 WHEREAS, No matter his celebrated academic credentials and 2-13 professional duties, Professor Wright always found time for 2-14 his students and for The University of Texas; whether he was 2-15 serving as coach of the law school's intramural touch football 2-16 team or as chairman of the Faculty Senate, his commitment to 2-17 the university and to his students was manifest, and he was a 2-18 much-loved and respected figure on campus; and 2-19 WHEREAS, For his professional expertise and his excellence 2-20 in teaching, Professor Wright was often recognized; the Lifetime 2-21 Achievement Award at The University of Texas School of Law, the 2-22 Student Bar Association Teaching Excellence Award, and the 2-23 Distinguished Alumnus Award from Wesleyan University were but 2-24 three of the many honors accorded him over his lifetime; and 3-1 WHEREAS, Charles Alan Wright made an indelible mark on 3-2 the legal field, and Texas was truly fortunate to call this 3-3 distinguished gentleman one of its citizens; he leaves behind 3-4 a legacy of brilliant legal scholarship and memories that his 3-5 family, friends, students, and colleagues will treasure forever; 3-6 now, therefore, be it 3-7 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 3-8 77th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the family 3-9 of Charles Alan Wright: his wife, Eleanor Custis Wright; his son, 3-10 Charles Edward Wright; his daughters, Eleanor Custis Clarke, 3-11 Margot Clarke, Henrietta Wright, and Cecily Wright Fitzsimons; 3-12 and his six grandchildren; and, be it further 3-13 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 3-14 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the 3-15 Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it 3-16 do so in memory of Charles Alan Wright. 3-17 Barrientos, Brown 3-18 Cain 3-19 ______________________________ _______________________________ 3-20 Member, Texas Senate Member, Texas Senate 3-21 _______________________________ 3-22 Member, Texas Senate 3-23 _______________________________ 3-24 President of the Senate 3-25 I hereby certify that the 3-26 above Resolution was adopted by 3-27 the Senate on May 22, 2001, 3-28 by a rising vote. 3-29 _______________________________ 3-30 Secretary of the Senate
