 1-2                         SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1132
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
 1-4     recognize Hillside Elementary School of El Paso, Texas, on the
 1-5     grand occasion of its 50th anniversary; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, In celebration of its anniversary, Hillside
 1-7     Elementary School has established a gallery of photographs and
 1-8     letters to showcase the many congratulatory greetings the school
 1-9     has received; the gallery also consists of old photographs of
1-10     the school, including some pictures from when it first opened
1-11     50 years ago; and
1-12           WHEREAS, Today, Hillside Elementary School has an
1-13     enrollment of 705 students and has a culturally diverse student
1-14     body reflective of the Southwest and the Hillside community; with
1-15     a 91.7 percent Hispanic population, the school posts signs in both
1-16     English and Spanish and offers two bilingual programs; and
1-17           WHEREAS, The school is also home to the Regional Day
1-18     School for the Deaf, and many of the hearing impaired students
1-19     are mainstreamed, thus sign language can be seen daily throughout
1-20     the school, and auditorially impaired children can enjoy singing,
1-21     dancing, and signing together in school programs; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, The school is located in an older central El Paso
 2-2     neighborhood, and its campus consists of a main building housing
 2-3     34 classrooms, an annex with four classrooms, and 16 portables; its
 2-4     faculty and staff provide a supportive and nurturing atmosphere and
 2-5     excellent instruction; and
 2-6           WHEREAS, The school has benefitted from the wise leadership
 2-7     of its principal, Dr. Linda Holman, and is today widely recognized
 2-8     as a first-rate institution with a sound academic curriculum and
 2-9     well-disciplined, high-achieving students; and
2-10           WHEREAS, The school has consistently aimed at providing
2-11     resources, programs, and experiences that would inspire excellence
2-12     in student performance and has been selected for several awards by
2-13     the Texas Successful School Awards System; and
2-14           WHEREAS, In 1994, Hillside Elementary School was selected
2-15     by the Texas Elementary and Early Childhood Network for an Overall
2-16     Excellence award; in 1998, Dr. Holman was selected as one of six
2-17     outstanding local educational administrators; in 2000, the school
2-18     was one of three elementary schools in El Paso recognized for
2-19     significant progress in technology integration by the El Paso
2-20     Collaborative for Academic Excellence; and
2-21           WHEREAS, The celebration of Hillside Elementary School's
2-22     50th anniversary is an opportunity for all who have attended
2-23     the school to express gratitude for the high standards the
2-24     school upholds and for the excellent educational opportunities
 3-1     it provides; now, therefore, be it
 3-2           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 3-3     77th Legislature, hereby commend Hillside Elementary School for
 3-4     its eminent success and extend best wishes to all associated
 3-5     with the school for a joyous 50th anniversary; and, be it further
 3-6           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
 3-7     school as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
