 1-2                         SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1133
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great
 1-4     pleasure in recognizing Samuel F. Santana for his outstanding
 1-5     work as a member of the Sun Bowl Association; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, The Sun Bowl is a longstanding tradition in El Paso,
 1-7     which began New Year's Day in 1935, when an El Paso high school
 1-8     all-star team defeated a team from Ranger, Texas; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, The game was originally played to raise funds for
1-10     improvements to the El Paso High School stadium and to help
1-11     underprivileged children; the next year, however, the event
1-12     featured college football teams; and
1-13           WHEREAS, Today, the Sun Bowl is one of the oldest bowls in
1-14     the nation, and CBS Sports will broadcast the 2001 game for the
1-15     34th consecutive year; and
1-16           WHEREAS, Samuel has long been involved with the Sun Bowl
1-17     Association, and he is the current association president for the
1-18     2001-2002 season; and
1-19           WHEREAS, For the past 18 years, Mr. Santana, who holds a
1-20     graduate degree in counseling, has worked for the El Paso County
1-21     Juvenile Probation Department, where he currently acts as Chief
1-22     Juvenile Probation Officer; and
1-23           WHEREAS, Respected by his fellow citizens as a community
 2-1     leader, Samuel Santana has taken part in numerous projects to
 2-2     benefit El Paso; he has served on several advisory boards,
 2-3     including those of the Children's Mental Health Association, the
 2-4     Mayor's Office for Development of a Runaway Center, the Texas
 2-5     Juvenile Probation Commission, and the Texas Youth Commission; and
 2-6           WHEREAS, In addition to his work with the Sun Bowl
 2-7     Association, Samuel holds memberships in the Texas Corrections
 2-8     Association, the Texas Probation Association, the Texas Coalition
 2-9     of Juvenile Justice, and Leadership El Paso; and
2-10           WHEREAS, For his role in carrying on the grand tradition
2-11     of the El Paso Sun Bowl games and for his outstanding civic
2-12     involvement, Samuel Santana is truly worthy of legislative
2-13     commendation; now, therefore, be it
2-14           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-15     77th Legislature, hereby commend Samuel F. Santana for his
2-16     valuable contributions as president of the Sun Bowl Association;
2-17     and, be it further
2-18           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
2-19     for him as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
