1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1139 1-3 WHEREAS, George Abbey deserves special legislative 1-4 recognition for his extensive work with San Jacinto College and 1-5 the Texas Aerospace Scholars Program; and 1-6 WHEREAS, The former director of the Johnson Space Center 1-7 who presently serves as senior assistant for international issues 1-8 to the administrator of NASA, Mr. Abbey has been a great benefactor 1-9 to the San Jacinto College by supporting the college's efforts to 1-10 create the successful Aerospace Consortium, and his efforts 1-11 contributed greatly to the award of nearly $1.6 million in grants 1-12 from the Texas Workforce Commission for 16 companies; and 1-13 WHEREAS, Mr. Abbey has been instrumental in helping 1-14 San Jacinto College expand its new manufacturing and machining 1-15 program and establish a Technology Training Center; he helped 1-16 in getting equipment for the center and in developing future 1-17 training initiatives; moreover, his assistance was invaluable in 1-18 the acquisition of a large NASA contract for the college to conduct 1-19 training; and 1-20 WHEREAS, Most notably, this esteemed gentleman has played 1-21 a key role in the success of the Aerospace Academy and the Texas 1-22 Aerospace Scholars Program; involved since its inception, Mr. Abbey 1-23 is now chair of the Academy Advisory Board and will continue to be 2-1 a positive influence and major factor in the program's future 2-2 accomplishments; and 2-3 WHEREAS, The Texas Aerospace Scholars Program, which owes so 2-4 much to Mr. Abbey's committed efforts and selfless dedication, is 2-5 a joint venture between NASA and the State of Texas that provides 2-6 a year-long program using the excitement of space exploration to 2-7 encourage students to study math, science, engineering, and computer 2-8 science; and 2-9 WHEREAS, Mr. Abbey has been a prominent figure in the 2-10 implementation and achievements of these noteworthy aerospace 2-11 initiatives as well as a major contributor to educational 2-12 excellence, and these enormous contributions to Texas education, 2-13 young people, and aerospace are greatly appreciated by the 2-14 Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it 2-15 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-16 77th Legislature, hereby honor George Abbey for his numerous good 2-17 works and extend to him best wishes for happiness and continued 2-18 success; and, be it further 2-19 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be 2-20 prepared for Mr. Abbey as an expression of high regard from the 2-21 Texas Senate. 2-22 Jackson 2-23 ______________________________________ 2-24 President of the Senate 2-25 I hereby certify that the above 2-26 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-27 on May 22, 2001. 2-28 ______________________________________ 2-29 Secretary of the Senate 3-1 ______________________________________ 3-2 Member, Texas Senate
