 1-4                                     of
 1-5                           Colonel William R. Furr
 1-6           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
 1-7     citizens of Austin and Pflugerville in mourning the loss of
 1-8     Colonel William R. "Randy" Furr, one of the state's most eminent
 1-9     citizens, who died May 17, 2001, at the age of 53; and
1-10           WHEREAS, Known as a true patriot and gentleman who
1-11     lived a full and rewarding life, the highly respected officer in
1-12     the Texas Army National Guard will be remembered for his devotion
1-13     to his country, and his duty as a member of the United States Army;
1-14     and
1-15           WHEREAS, Diligent in the performance of his duties,
1-16     Colonel Furr was known to his fellow officers and those under his
1-17     command for his strength of character, loyalty, and leadership
1-18     capability; and
1-19           WHEREAS, Beginning his extensive military education in
1-20     1968, the highly decorated colonel received numerous medals,
1-21     awards, and citations during his distinguished 33-year career;
 2-1     he was the recipient of the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service
 2-2     Medal, Lone Star Distinguished Service Medal, and Master Parachute
 2-3     Badge; and
 2-4           WHEREAS, A summa cum laude graduate of Southwest Texas
 2-5     State University, he received a master's degree in education in
 2-6     1992; the co-founder of the Undersea Heritage and Exploration
 2-7     Society, Colonel Furr had an avid interest in fast cars, faster
 2-8     boats, scuba diving, and jumping out of airplanes; and
 2-9           WHEREAS, Preceded in death by his parents,
2-10     Raymond O. and Bettye Furr, the devoted father and grandfather
2-11     leaves a legacy of dedication and devotion that will be forever
2-12     cherished by his family and friends; now, therefore, be it
2-13           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-14     77th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
2-15     family of Colonel William R. Furr:  his parents,
2-16     Mr. and Mrs. Fritz Renfro; his daughters and son-in-law,
2-17     Sharon Ragsdale and Suzanne and Toby Kern; his sons and
2-18     daughters-in-law, Reece and Mary Blincoe and Zane and Carol Furr;
2-19     his sisters and brothers-in-law, Judy and Wayne Talley,
2-20     Jan and Mickey Blissit, Debbie and Arlin Dragoo, and
2-21     Lizanne and Preston Starr; and his grandchildren; and, be it
2-22     further
2-23           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
2-24     for the family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
 3-1     Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it
 3-2     do so in memory of Colonel William R. Furr.
