1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1179 1-3 In Memory 1-4 of 1-5 The Honorable James H. Russell 1-6 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens 1-7 of Belton and Temple in mourning the loss of Judge James H. Russell, 1-8 who died May 12, 2001, at the age of 86; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Born December 20, 1914, in Houston, James Russell 1-10 moved to Belton in 1926 and graduated from Belton High School in 1-11 1931; he attended The University of Texas at Austin and graduated 1-12 from The University of Texas School of Law; he served in the 1-13 Judge Advocate General Corps during World War II; and 1-14 WHEREAS, James Russell engaged in the private practice of 1-15 law in Beeville, Dallas, and Washington, D.C., and was licensed 1-16 to practice law before the United States Supreme Court; after 1-17 the war, he worked as an attorney for H. L. Hunt in Dallas and 1-18 returned to Belton in 1947 to take charge of the family business, 1-19 the Belton Journal; and 1-20 WHEREAS, He became well known for his newspaper column, 1-21 "Russelling Around," which he wrote from 1947 until 2000 and 2-1 was dedicated to his work as a newspaper owner, publisher, editor, 2-2 advertising manager, and print shop owner; the Russell family sold 2-3 the paper in 1973, and Jim Russell became judge of the newly 2-4 created Bell County Court at Law; after his retirement in 1986, 2-5 he served as a visiting judge in the county, district, and state 2-6 supreme courts; and 2-7 WHEREAS, An exemplary and distinguished gentleman, 2-8 Judge Russell was respected for his many accomplishments and his 2-9 leadership in the community; and 2-10 WHEREAS, He served as president of the Chamber of Commerce 2-11 and of the Rotary Club; he was elected to the Belton City 2-12 Commission and served on the first city council; and 2-13 WHEREAS, A man of integrity, strength, and generosity, he 2-14 gave unselfishly of his time to others, and his wisdom, warmth, 2-15 and valued counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew him; and 2-16 WHEREAS, A devout Christian, Judge Russell was a member of 2-17 Saint Luke's Episcopal Church; and 2-18 WHEREAS, Jim Russell lived his life to the fullest and was 2-19 a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and he leaves behind 2-20 memories that will be treasured forever by his family and many 2-21 friends; now, therefore, be it 2-22 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-23 77th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences 3-1 to the bereaved family of James H. Russell: his wife, 3-2 Nan Russell; his daughters and sons-in-law, Enid and 3-3 James W. Dickson and Helen and Jerry R.
