1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1236 1-3 In Memory 1-4 of 1-5 Janet Frey Harte 1-6 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens 1-7 of Corpus Christi in mourning the loss of Janet Frey Harte, who 1-8 died on February 23, 1999, at the age of 75; and 1-9 WHEREAS, One of Corpus Christi's most generous 1-10 philanthropists and energetic activists for environmental 1-11 protection, women's issues, civil rights, and the homeless, 1-12 Janet Harte made a significant difference in the lives of many 1-13 Texans; and 1-14 WHEREAS, By championing recycling and becoming a founding 1-15 member of the Corpus Christi Citizens' Committee on Recycling, 1-16 Janet Harte encouraged the people of the South Texas city by 1-17 her example to recycle trash and to protect its beaches and 1-18 environment; in 1969 Lady Bird Johnson honored Janet's commitment 1-19 to the environment and appointed her to the Committee for the 1-20 Wild Flowers of Texas, and in 1977 Lieutenant Governor Bill Hobby 1-21 appointed her to an interim committee to study Texas beaches; and 2-1 WHEREAS, Because of her compassion for others, Janet Harte 2-2 became a vocal advocate for women's reproductive health and the 2-3 catalyst for the founding of Planned Parenthood of South Texas; 2-4 she also served as its president and generously contributed in 2-5 1998 to the local chapter to help fund pregnancy education programs 2-6 for teenagers; and 2-7 WHEREAS, The turmoil and threatened violence in the 2-8 aftermath of Martin Luther King's assassination was assuaged 2-9 in Corpus Christi, in part, by her committed work with local 2-10 civil rights leaders, and in recognition for her contribution 2-11 to her community during this difficult time, Dr. Hector P. Garcia 2-12 recognized her in 1988 for her strength and valor; and 2-13 WHEREAS, The generosity displayed by Janet Harte 2-14 and her husband, Edward, over the years set the standard for 2-15 charitable contributions; and 2-16 WHEREAS, In addition to her compassion for humanity 2-17 and commitment to the environment, Janet had a passion for 2-18 literature and music; she graduated from Bennington College with 2-19 a bachelor's degree in literature and read voraciously all her 2-20 life, volunteered for the library, proofread for the Federation 2-21 of Americans for Immigration Reform, and became a charter member 2-22 of the Corpus Christi Chamber Music Society; and 2-23 WHEREAS, Janet Harte profoundly influenced the 2-24 Corpus Christi community with her kindness and generosity, 3-1 and her legacy lives on through the innumerable lives that 3-2 she touched and changed by her example; now, therefore, be it 3-3 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 3-4 76th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the 3-5 members of her family: her husband, Edward H.
