1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1260 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to 1-4 recognize Sergeant Alfredo "Freddy" Gonzalez who has posthumously 1-5 received the Medal of Honor for the courage and supreme personal 1-6 sacrifice he displayed near Thua Thien, Republic of Vietnam, on 1-7 February 4, 1968, during the Tet Offensive; more than 30 years 1-8 after his death, Freddy Gonzalez received a second Medal of Honor 1-9 in a ceremony held on May 23, 2001; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Born May 23, 1946, in Edinburg, Texas, Freddy Gonzalez 1-11 attended Edinburg High School and began his military service after 1-12 graduating in 1965; he ultimately achieved the rank of Sergeant, 1-13 United States Marine Corps, Company A, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, 1-14 1st Marine Division; and 1-15 WHEREAS, During his service as platoon commander, 3rd Platoon, 1-16 Company A, Sergeant Gonzalez's actions were above and beyond the 1-17 call of duty; on January 31, 1968, his unit was deployed to Hue 1-18 to relieve the Village of Lang Van Lrong; and 1-19 WHEREAS, While carrying out the duty, Freddy's platoon 1-20 received a heavy volume of enemy fire, and one of the marines on 1-21 top of a tank was wounded and fell to the ground; disregarding his 1-22 own personal safety, Sergeant Gonzalez ran through the fire-swept 2-1 area and carried his fellow marine to covered position for 2-2 treatment; and 2-3 WHEREAS, Following the rescue, a wounded Sergeant Gonzalez 2-4 once again risked his life to bring his men to safety, moving his 2-5 platoon to a more secure location by destroying the hostile 2-6 position with hand grenades; and 2-7 WHEREAS, Seriously wounded again on February 3, 1968, 2-8 Sergeant Gonzalez refused medical treatment to continue 2-9 supervising his men; the following day, the enemy had pinned the 2-10 company down, and Sergeant Gonzalez, utilizing a number of light 2-11 antitank assault weapons, intrepidly moved from position to 2-12 position firing numerous rounds; and 2-13 WHEREAS, During this final act of bravery, Sergeant Gonzalez 2-14 successfully knocked out a rocket position and suppressed much of 2-15 the enemy fire before falling mortally wounded on February 4, 1968, 2-16 at age 21; and 2-17 WHEREAS, In another fitting tribute to this fallen warrior, 2-18 his mother received the Hispanic Medal of Honor on her son's behalf 2-19 Memorial Day Weekend; and 2-20 WHEREAS, The heroism and exceptional leadership manifested 2-21 by Sergeant Gonzalez brought great honor upon himself and the 2-22 Marine Corps; this man's actions are a reminder of the sacrifices 2-23 made by our country's military men and women who risk their 3-1 lives to protect our values and our way of life; and 3-2 WHEREAS, The courage and personal sacrifice of this dauntless 3-3 man is a source of pride for all Texans and is truly worthy of the 3-4 military's highest award; now, therefore, be it 3-5 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 3-6 77th Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of 3-7 Alfredo Gonzalez and his outstanding acts of gallantry in 3-8 the service of his country; and, be it further 3-9 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 3-10 Sergeant Gonzalez's mother, Dolia Gonzalez, as a tribute to the 3-11 extraordinary and self-sacrificing efforts of her beloved son. 3-12 Truan 3-13 Armbrister Gallegos Ogden 3-14 Barrientos Harris Shapiro 3-15 Bernsen Haywood Shapleigh 3-16 Bivins Jackson Sibley 3-17 Brown Lindsay Staples 3-18 Cain Lucio Van de Putte 3-19 Carona Madla Wentworth 3-20 Duncan Moncrief West 3-21 Ellis Nelson Whitmire 3-22 Fraser Zaffirini 3-23 Ratliff, President of the Senate 3-24 ______________________________________ 3-25 President of the Senate 3-26 I hereby certify that the above 3-27 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-28 on May 27, 2001. 3-29 ______________________________________ 3-30 Secretary of the Senate 3-31 ______________________________________ 3-32 Dean of the Senate
