 1-2                         SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1261
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride
 1-4     in joining citizens across America in observing Memorial Day, on
 1-5     Monday, May 28, 2001; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, On Memorial Day, we pay homage to those who
 1-7     lost their lives fighting for our nation, for it is due to their
 1-8     courage and sacrifice that today our nation is free and prosperous;
 1-9     and
1-10           WHEREAS, Those who died for their country in World War I,
1-11     World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, and
1-12     other conflicts have left behind legacies of courage and devotion
1-13     for generations of American citizens, as well as memories that will
1-14     be treasured forever in the hearts and minds of all who knew them;
1-15     and
1-16           WHEREAS, This special day is an opportunity for Americans
1-17     everywhere to express their heartfelt gratitude to the United States
1-18     veterans, both living and dead, for the valor and dedication they
1-19     have shown on behalf of our beloved country; today, there are over
1-20     1.5 million veterans living in Texas and deserving of our praise;
1-21     and
1-22           WHEREAS, It is a grateful nation today that reflects
1-23     upon our American heritage and recognizes the extreme sacrifices
 2-1     made by all who serve in the armed forces; and
 2-2           WHEREAS, Memorial Day was originally called Decoration
 2-3     Day and was first observed on May 30, 1868, when flowers were
 2-4     placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers; in 1968,
 2-5     Congress designated the last Monday in May as Memorial Day; now,
 2-6     therefore, be it
 2-7           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 2-8     77th Legislature, hereby express appreciation to all the brave men
 2-9     and women who have served our great country and honor the memory of
2-10     those who made the supreme sacrifice.
