 1-2                         SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1265
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
 1-4     recognize Guadalupe "Lupe" Valdez, Jr., for his 50 years of
 1-5     outstanding community leadership and extend congratulations
 1-6     to Mr. and Mrs. Valdez on the occasion of their 60th wedding
 1-7     anniversary on June 11, 2001; and
 1-8           WHEREAS, Guadalupe Valdez was born in Kingsville, Texas,
 1-9     in 1917; he served his country in the United States Army
1-10     during World War II and graduated from Del Mar Junior College
1-11     in 1958; he later earned his bachelor of arts degree from
1-12     Texas A&I University at Corpus Christi and attended graduate
1-13     classes in political science at Corpus Christi State University;
1-14     and
1-15           WHEREAS, Guadalupe Valdez was married on June 11, 1941,
1-16     to Bernarda Gonzalez, and the couple has been blessed with four
1-17     children who are now productive and successful citizens; and
1-18           WHEREAS, Mr. Valdez was an interpreter for the army and
1-19     served for 35 years with the Federal Civil Service as a production
1-20     controller and equal employment opportunity officer for the Navy
1-21     and the Army; his career has also included serving as a teacher
1-22     at an adult learning center, as a substitute teacher for the
 2-1     Corpus Christi Independent School District, and as an editorial
 2-2     writer and political analyst; and
 2-3           WHEREAS, Well known for his lifelong dedication to his
 2-4     community, Guadalupe Valdez was formerly an education coordinator
 2-5     for the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC),
 2-6     the cofounder of International Little League baseball in
 2-7     Corpus Christi, the cofounder of Toastmasters International
 2-8     Speakers Bureau, the treasurer of the Nueces County Senior
 2-9     Citizens Association, and a member of the Corpus Christi Housing
2-10     Authority Commission and Parks and Recreation Department; and
2-11           WHEREAS, Mr. Valdez has also served as a scout leader
2-12     for Boy Scouts of America, as a fundraiser for the American
2-13     Cancer Society, as an Elder at church, and as a member of the
2-14     Corpus Christi Human Relations Commission; and
2-15           WHEREAS, A man of many talents and interests, Mr. Valdez is
2-16     also an author and has written approximately 100 poems in Spanish
2-17     and 50 poems in English; he is working on a compilation of "Dichos,
2-18     Chismes y Refranes," as well as writing his autobiography; and
2-19           WHEREAS, Guadalupe Valdez is an exemplary gentleman and a
2-20     humanitarian who generously gives of his time and energy to help
2-21     his fellowman; he is beloved and respected by his family and many
2-22     friends, and he deserves recognition for his able leadership and
2-23     his many accomplishments; now, therefore, be it
 3-1           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 3-2     77th Legislature, hereby commend Guadalupe Valdez, Jr., on
 3-3     his years of hard work and his invaluable contributions to
 3-4     his community and extend best wishes to him and to his wife,
 3-5     Bernarda Valdez, on the grand occasion of their 60th anniversary;
 3-6     and, be it further
 3-7           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
 3-8     for Mr. and Mrs. Guadalupe Valdez and their children,
 3-9     Maira Eliza Valderrama, Anna Maria Benavidez, Guadalupe Valdez III,
3-10     and Diana V. Leal, as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
