LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD Austin, Texas FISCAL NOTE, 77th Regular Session April 9, 2001 TO: Honorable Paul Sadler, Chair, House Committee on Public Education FROM: John Keel, Director, Legislative Budget Board IN RE: HB427 by Morrison (Relating to compulsory school attendance.), As Introduced ************************************************************************** * No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated. * ************************************************************************** The bill amends 25.086 of the Texas Education Code to require that a child attend school until the end of the year in which the child's 18th birthday occurs. The change in age may provide districts with another tool to prevent dropouts, however, this change will not result in a significant change in the number of 18 year-old students enrolled in the public school system. For each additional student in average daily attendance, annual state costs will increase approximately $5,400. Local Government Impact No significant fiscal implication to units of local government is anticipated. Source Agencies: 701 Texas Education Agency LBB Staff: JK, CT, RN
