LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD Austin, Texas FISCAL NOTE, 77th Regular Session April 2, 2001 TO: Honorable Paul Sadler, Chair, House Committee on Public Education FROM: John Keel, Director, Legislative Budget Board IN RE: HB1435 by Capelo (Relating to the performance indicators used for purposes of public school accountability.), As Introduced ************************************************************************** * No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated. * ************************************************************************** The Texas Education Agency and the Higher Education Coordinating Board are currently working on an initiative concerning data sharing. Therefore, it is estimated that there would be minimal costs associated with collecting higher education enrollment data for the purposes of an additional school performance indicator. Local Government Impact A state-level tracking system would be able to track students enrolling in public institutions of higher education, thus not requiring additional effort by school districts. However, it is estimated that the post-graduation enrollment of about 20,000 graduates each year would not be found by the tracking system and require school district follow-up, documentation, and reporting. This is estimated at approximately $10 per student, for a statewide, annual cost to school districts of $200,000. Source Agencies: 701 Texas Education Agency LBB Staff: JK, CT, PF, JM
