LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD Austin, Texas FISCAL NOTE, 77th Regular Session April 24, 2001 TO: Honorable Paul Sadler, Chair, House Committee on Public Education FROM: John Keel, Director, Legislative Budget Board IN RE: HB3253 by Giddings (Relating to the collection of certain student information by a school district or open-enrollment charter school.), As Introduced ************************************************************************** * No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated. * * * ************************************************************************** The bill requires the Texas Education Agency (TEA) to collect data on high school students for institutions of higher education to use in recruiting potential students. Name, address, grade point average, curriculum status and other information would be collected as directory information subject to parental release authorization. The directory information collected by TEA would be sold to institutions of higher education on a cost-recovery basis. Technology Impact Local Government Impact No significant fiscal implication to units of local government is anticipated. TEA staff believe that districts currently collect and maintain student address information and other information that would be collected and reported under this bill. Assuming these data are already collected and maintained locally, significant costs are not anticipated for data extraction and reporting to the state.
