LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD Austin, Texas FISCAL NOTE, 77th Regular Session January 18, 2001 TO: Honorable David Sibley, Chair, Senate Committee on Business & Commerce FROM: John Keel, Director, Legislative Budget Board IN RE: SB78 by Haywood (Relating to the liability of certain local chambers of commerce.), As Introduced ************************************************************************** * No fiscal implication to the State is anticipated. * ************************************************************************** Local Government Impact The bill would add certain local chambers of commerce to the list of charitable organizations identified in Section 84.003, Civil Practice and Remedies Code. Charitable organizations under Section 84.003 are protected by limits on civil liability. The bill would take effect September 1, 2001. Eligible chambers of commerce would receive lower insurance rates, thus providing a cost savings. According to the Texas Association of Business and Chambers of Commerce, the level of coverage depends on the size of the board and the level of activities by the chamber; therefore, the amount of the cost savings would vary by chamber of commerce.
