Local Government Impact

The bill would add certain local chambers of commerce to the list of
charitable organizations identified in Section 84.003, Civil Practice and
Remedies Code. Charitable organizations under Section 84.003 are
protected by limits on civil liability. The bill would take effect
September 1, 2001.

Eligible chambers of commerce would receive lower insurance rates, thus
providing a cost savings. According to the Texas Association of
Business and Chambers of Commerce, the level of coverage depends on the
size of the board and the level of activities by the chamber; therefore,
the amount of the cost savings would vary by chamber of commerce.
