LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD Austin, Texas FISCAL NOTE, 77th Regular Session April 3, 2001 TO: Honorable Bob Turner, Chair, House Committee on Public Safety FROM: John Keel, Director, Legislative Budget Board IN RE: SB154 by Truan (Relating to a requirement that information about anatomical gifts be included in the curriculum of certain driver education and driving safety courses.), As Engrossed ************************************************************************** * No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated. * ************************************************************************** The bill would have minimal fiscal implications for the operations of the Texas Education Agency. The bill requires the commissioner of education to require that information relating to anatomical gifts be included in the curriculum of each driver education and driving safety course. The agency would incur costs associated with such a requirement; approximately $5,000 in the first year of implementation. These costs are associated with developing new materials, distributing the materials and information about the new requirement to driver education schools and driving safety course owners and school districts, reviewing revised curriculums, revising rules, and training Agency staff to include appropriate checks in compliance reviews. Local Government Impact No significant fiscal implication to units of local government is anticipated. Although they are not units of local governments, individuals and/or entities operating TEA-approved driver education and safety training programs would need to update curriculum materials to ensure that the information concerning anatomical gifts is provided to students.
