LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD Austin, Texas FISCAL NOTE, 77th Regular Session February 12, 2001 TO: Honorable Teel Bivins, Chair, Senate Committee on Education FROM: John Keel, Director, Legislative Budget Board IN RE: SB189 by Lindsay (Relating to the authority of a juvenile justice alternative education program to obtain a waiver regarding required days of operation.), As Introduced ************************************************************************** * No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated. * ************************************************************************** The bill authorizes a juvenile justice alternative education program (JJAEP) to seek a waiver from the Commissioner of Education from the requirement that a program be operated for a minimum of 180 days. This waiver option is presently given to local school districts. Texas Education Code, Section 25.081(b) allows the Commissioner to approve such waivers in instances where disasters, floods, extreme weather conditions, fuel curtailments, or another calamities cause school closings.
