The bill authorizes a juvenile justice alternative education program
(JJAEP) to seek a waiver from the Commissioner of Education from the
requirement that a program be operated for a minimum of 180 days. This
waiver option is presently given to local school districts. Texas
Education Code, Section 25.081(b) allows the Commissioner to approve
such waivers in instances where disasters, floods, extreme weather
conditions, fuel curtailments, or another calamities cause school
closings.

Local Government Impact

No significant fiscal implication to units of local government is
anticipated.
