LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD Austin, Texas FISCAL NOTE, 77th Regular Session February 19, 2001 TO: Honorable Royce West, Chair, Senate Committee on Jurisprudence FROM: John Keel, Director, Legislative Budget Board IN RE: SB678 by West, Royce (Relating to the period during which a justice, municipal, or juvenile court may defer proceedings against certain persons for purposes of attending a teen court program.), Committee Report 1st House, Substituted ************************************************************************** * No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated. * ************************************************************************** The bill would amend Article 45.052, Code of Criminal Procedure, to allow a justice or municipal court to defer proceedings against certain defendants under the age of 18 for not more than 180 days. Additionally, defendants for whom proceedings are deferred would be required to complete a teen court program not later than the 90th day after the punishment hearing would be held. Under the provisions of the bill, the Family Code would be amended to allow a juvenile court to defer proceedings not more than 180 days for certain children and those children would be required to complete a teen court program by the 90th day after the punishment hearing.
