The bill would amend Article 45.052, Code of Criminal Procedure, to allow
a justice or municipal court to defer proceedings against certain
defendants under the age of 18 for not more than 180 days. Additionally,
defendants for whom proceedings are deferred would be required to
complete a teen court program not later than the 90th day after the
punishment hearing would be held. Under the provisions of the bill, the
Family Code would be amended to allow a juvenile court to defer
proceedings not more than 180 days for certain children and those
children would be required to complete a teen court program by the 90th
day after the punishment hearing.
Local Government Impact
No significant fiscal implication to units of local government is
anticipated.
