         Pursuant to a notice posted in accordance with Senate Rule  
         11.18, a public hearing of the Senate Committee on Education was  
         held on Wednesday, January 24, 2001, in the Capitol Extension,  
         Room E1.012, at Austin, Texas.

         The chair called the meeting to order at 9:07 a.m.  There being  
         a quorum present, the following business was transacted:   
          
         Introduction of Education Committee staff. 
          
         Senator Zaffirini moved that the Committee rules be adopted,  
         there being no objection, the rules were adopted. 
          
         Committee member introduction of staff. 
          
         Opening remarks by Senator Bivins. 
          
         Opening remarks by Senator Zaffirini. 
          
         Opening remarks by Senator Truan. 
         Announcement of joint hearing with the Special Commission on  
         21st Century Colleges and Universities to take place on February  
         7th. 
          
         There being no further business, at 9:25 a.m. Senator Bivins  
         moved that the Committee stand recessed subject to the call of  
         the chair.  Without objection, it was so ordered.
