MINUTES SENATE COMMITTEE ON STATE AFFAIRS Subcommittee on Native American Affairs Monday, April 29, 2002 1:00 p.m. San Antonio, City Council Chambers ***** Pursuant to a notice posted in accordance with Senate Rule 11.18, a public hearing of the Senate Committee on State Affairs Subcommittee on Native American Affairs was held on Monday, April 29, 2002, in the San Antonio, City Council Chambers. ***** MEMBERS PRESENT: MEMBERS ABSENT: Senator Frank Madla, Chair Senator John Carona Senator Kenneth Armbrister ***** Senator Frank Madla, chair, called the meeting to order at 1:00 p.m. The following business was transacted: The chair laid out the charge: Examine the need and feasibility for establishing a state agency or commission for Native American affairs. The Committee should determine whether certain issues facing the Native American community are being adequately addressed by existing state agencies. The issues to be examined should include diabetes susceptibility, alcohol abuse prevention, educational opportunities, water rights, land ownership, burial ground disturbance, historical representation, and tax administration. Witnesses testifying and registering on the charge are shown on the attached list. There being no further business, at 4:50 p.m. Senator Madla moved that the Committee stand recessed subject to the call of the chair.
