MINUTES SENATE COMMITTEE ON NOMINATIONS Tuesday, February 13, 2001 1:30 p.m. Capitol Extension, Room E1.016 ***** Pursuant to a notice posted in accordance with Senate Rule 11.18, a public hearing of the Senate Committee on Nominations was held on Tuesday, February 13, 2001, in the Capitol Extension, Room E1.016, at Austin, Texas. ***** MEMBERS PRESENT: MEMBERS ABSENT: Senator Jane Nelson, Chair None Senator Leticia Van de Putte, Vice Chair Senator Gonzalo Barrientos Senator Mario Gallegos, Jr. Senator Tom Haywood Senator Jon Lindsay Senator Jeff Wentworth ***** The Chair called the meeting to order at 1:31 p.m. There being a quorum present, the following business was transacted. The following members arrived after the roll was called: Senator Barrientos Senator Lindsay Senator Van de Putte Senator Haywood moved that the minutes from the previous meeting be approved. There being no objections, the minutes were adopted. The Chair announced that the nomination of Mart Nelson, nominee to the Telecommunication Infrastructure Fund Board, would be left pending and that the committee would reschedule his appearance for a future meeting. The Chair laid out the names of the nominees to the Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. The Chair recognized Senator Barrientos to introduce Dee Ann Pederson. The Chair recognized Senator Zaffirini to introduce Mario A. Escobar. The Chair recognized Senator Shapiro to introduce Gary C. Brantley. The nominees made opening statements and then responded to questions by members of the Committee. At 1:49 p.m., Senator Lindsay moved to recommend to the full Senate that Gary C. Brantley, Mario A. Escobar, and Dee Ann Pederson be confirmed to the Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. Senator Van de Putte seconded the motion. The motion carried with a vote of 7 ayes and 0 nays. The Chair laid out the nominees for the Texas Youth Commission and introduced Nick T. Serafy. The Chair recognized Senator Lindsay to introduce Cathleen Herasimchuk. The nominees made opening statements and then responded to questions by members of the Committee. At 2:17 p.m., Senator Barrientos moved to recommend to the full Senate that Cathleen Herasimchuk and Nick T. Serafy be confirmed to the Texas Youth Commission. Senator Van de Putte seconded the motion. The motion carried with a vote of 7 ayes and 0 nays. Senators Haywood and Wentworth asked to be shown as voting aye. Without objection, the motion carried. At 2:18 p.m., Senator Barrientos requested that the Texas Juvenile Probation Commission, Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education Commission, Texas Commission on Human Rights, and the Board of Pilot Commissioners for Galveston County be stricken from the list of Boards with waived appearances and requested those Boards to appear before the Committee in the future. There was no objection. The Chair announced that the nomination of Jimmy R. White, nominee to the Crime Stoppers Advisory Council, would be left pending. At 2:22 p.m., Senator Lindsay moved to recommend to the full Senate that nominees to the following Boards be confirmed: Crime Stoppers Advisory Council, School Land Board, Gulf Coast Disposal Authority Board of Directors, Texas State Library and Archives Commission, Children's Trust Fund of Texas Council, and Angelina and Neches River Authority Board of Directors. Senator Van de Putte seconded the motion. The motion carried with a vote of 7 ayes and 0 nays. Senators Haywood and Wentworth asked to be shown as voting aye. Without objection, the motion carried. There being no further business, at 2:24 p.m. Senator Lindsay moved that the Committee stand recessed subject to the call of the Chair.
