MINUTES SENATE COMMITTEE ON NOMINATIONS Tuesday, May 15, 2001 1:30 p.m. or upon adjournment Capitol Extension, Room E1.016 ***** Pursuant to a notice posted in accordance with Senate Rule 11.18, a public hearing of the Senate Committee on Nominations was held on Tuesday, May 15, 2001, in the Capitol Extension, Room E1.016, at Austin, Texas. ***** MEMBERS PRESENT: MEMBERS ABSENT: Senator Jane Nelson, Chair Senator Mario Gallegos, Jr. Senator Leticia Van de Putte, Vice Chair Senator Gonzalo Barrientos Senator Tom Haywood Senator Jon Lindsay Senator Jeff Wentworth ***** The Chair called the meeting to order at 3:25 p.m. There being a quorum present, the following business was transacted. Senator Wentworth moved that the minutes from the previous meeting be adopted. Without objection, the motion carried. The Chair laid out the nominees to the Governing Board for the Texas School for the Deaf. The Chair recognize Senator Duncan to introduce Kenneth Kesterson. The Chair recognized Senator Lindsay to introduce Theresa Johnson. The nominee made opening remarks and then responded to questions by Senator Barrientos. Senator Barrientos moved to recommend to the full Senate that Theresa Johnson and Kenneth Kesterson be confirmed to the Governing Board for the Texas School for the Deaf. Senator Wentworth seconded the motion. The motion carried with a vote of 7 ayes and 0 nays. Senators Gallegos and Van de Putte asked to be shown as voting aye. Without objection, the motion carried. The Chair laid out the nominees to the Upper Neches River Municipal Water Authority. The Chair recognized Senator Lindsay to introduce Robert McKelvey and Joe Crutcher. The nominees made opening remarks and then responded to questions by Senator Lindsay. Senator Lindsay moved to recommend to the full Senate that Robert McKelvey and Joe Crutcher be confirmed to the Upper Neches River Municipal Water Authority. Senator Haywood seconded the motion. The motion carried with a vote of 7 ayes and 0 nays. Senators Gallegos and Van de Putte asked to be shown voting aye. Without objection, the motion carried. The Chair laid out the nominees to the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles. The Chair recognized Senator Wentworth to introduce James E. Bush. The Chair recognized Senator Barrientos to introduce Gerald Garrett. The Chair recognized Senator Lindsay to introduce Roy Garcia. The nominees made opening remarks and then responded to questions by members of the Committee. The Chair recognized Senator Staples to make remarks on behalf of Roy Garcia. Senator Lindsay moved to recommend to the full Senate that James E. Bush, Gerald Garrett, and Roy Garcia be confirmed to the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles. Senator Van de Putte seconded the motion. The motion carried with a vote of 7 ayes and 0 nays. Senators Gallegos and Haywood asked to be shown as voting aye. Without objection, the motion carried. Senator Lindsay moved to recommend to the full Senate that the nominees with waived appearances listed on the attached agenda be confirmed to their respective boards. Senator Van de Putte seconded the motion. The motion carried with a vote of 7 ayes and 0 nays. Senators Gallegos and Haywood asked to be shown as voting aye. Without objection, the motion carried. There being no further business, at 4:49 p.m. Senator Van de Putte moved that the Committee be adjourned.
