CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Throughout the history of this nation, in times of
great peril, men and women of the United States military have
marched bravely into battle to defend our precious liberties; and
WHEREAS, A member of the 64th Forward Support Battalion, U.S.
Army Sergeant Melissa Valles embarked from Fort Carson, Colorado,
in support of our nation's campaign to liberate Iraqi citizens from
oppression; while working to keep the peace in Balad, she was killed
while serving her country on July 9, 2003; and
WHEREAS, A 1995 graduate of Eagle Pass High School, she was an
active member of the Reserve Officers Training Corps before joining
the United States Army; this vivacious young woman enjoyed
basketball and dancing, and her ability to perform duties with the
utmost distinction allowed her to recently attain the rank of
sergeant; and
WHEREAS, Unflinching bravery and a resolute commitment to
fulfill her oath to serve, regardless of the personal consequences,
were demonstrated by this valorous American, who gave her life to
preserve liberty; the State of Texas and the nation now mourn the
loss of Melissa Valles: a soldier for a brief period, a hero
forever; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the 78th Legislature of the State of Texas,
1st Called Session, hereby honor the life of Melissa Valles and
extend deepest sympathy to her family: to her mother and
stepfather, Marianita Valles and Carlos Gomez; to her brothers,
Fernando Valles, Jr., and Jesus Valles; to her sister, Maribel
Valles; and to the other relatives and many friends of this beloved
young woman; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in memory of
Melissa Valles.
