R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The family and friends of the Reverend Marion
Burleson Smith of Pampa were deeply saddened by the passing of this
esteemed clergyman on June 14, 2003, at the age of 88; and
WHEREAS, Born on December 28, 1914, in Richland Springs,
Reverend Smith graduated from Howard Payne College in 1936; he
taught school and coached at several central Texas schools before
entering the gospel ministry in 1942; and
WHEREAS, Reverend Smith served congregations in Agua Dulce,
Calallen, and Marble Falls and then moved to the Texas Panhandle,
where he led the First Baptist Church of Wheeler, Highland Baptist
Church of Pampa, Alanreed Baptist Church, and College Baptist
Church of Big Spring; over the years, Reverend Smith played a
pivotal role in many family milestones, performing 1,191 funerals,
858 weddings, and 421 baptisms during his ministerial career; and
WHEREAS, In the Pampa area, Reverend Smith taught science at
Pampa High School and Clarendon College-Pampa Center and served as
interim pastor for many local Baptist churches; and
WHEREAS, A devoted husband and family man who demonstrated
strong faith and dedication in his spiritual work, Reverend Smith
positively influenced the lives of many of his fellow Texans, and
his memory will not soon be forgotten; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of
the Reverend Marion Burleson Smith and extend deepest sympathy to
the members of his family: to his wife, Laura B. Smith; to his
daughters and their spouses, Sylvia and Leo Shuler and Marilyn and
Rex Whitaker; to his sons and their spouses, Philip and Jane Smith,
David Smith, and Herbert and Lynn Smith; to his grandchildren,
Lucretia Davis, Mike Lee, Melanie Gates, Brent Lee, Lori Barnes,
Lisa Osborne, Mark Whitaker, Kristi Whitaker, Jennifer Scogin,
Emily Stephen, Nathan Smith, Courtney Pederson, Jonathan Smith, and
Jared Smith; to his 28 great-grandchildren and two
great-great-grandchildren; and to his other relatives and many
friends; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives adjourns on this day, it do so in memory of the
Reverend Marion Burleson Smith.
