H.R. No. 11 


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, On June 19, 2003, The Woodlands Operating Company and The Woodlands Villager newspaper presented the fifth annual Hometown Heroes awards to five citizens of The Woodlands who have made extraordinary contributions toward the betterment of their community; and WHEREAS, One of these Hometown Heroes is Phillip Barker II, who, at the age of 13, is the youngest person ever to receive this award since its inception in 1999; a Branch Crossing Junior High School student, Mr. Barker has organized three food drives benefiting the Interfaith Food Pantry, even managing with the help of friends to deliver an 18-wheeler full of canned food items to the organization; his work in behalf of homeless and low-income families has been honored by the interfaith organization, which named him its first-ever Interfaith Ambassador, and by the organizers of the 16th Annual Commemorative Celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr., who in January presented him with the prestigious Drum Major award; and WHEREAS, Demonstrating uncommon commitment, generosity, and selflessness, this Hometown Hero has shown himself to be a young man of great distinction, and the citizens of the Lone Star State are proud to join with residents of The Woodlands in paying tribute to this exemplary community leader and volunteer; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commend Phillip Barker of The Woodlands on his recent designation as a 2003 Hometown Hero and extend to him best wishes for success and happiness in all his future endeavors; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Barker as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
