R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, A 100th birthday is truly cause for a celebration, and on July 5, 2003, Eunice Exa Hitt of Hainesville marked this joyous milestone at a party at the Mineola home of Larry and Sue Wisdom in the company of her family and many friends; and WHEREAS, Affectionately known as "Nannie," she was born on July 3, 1903, in Van Zandt County, near Van; the fourth of seven children in the family of Ezra and Ola Tunnell, she attended Creagleville schools and worked in the cotton fields, earning about $1 a day, money that helped support the family; she recalls a happy childhood that included fishing for crawdads and performing such chores as milking cows, raising chickens, washing clothes on a rub board, and drawing water from a well; and WHEREAS, This lovely lady met Milton Hitt at the Creagleville School; the couple were married in 1920, when she was 17 years old, and she became the first of her siblings to marry and leave home; Mrs. Hitt and her husband lived on a cotton farm they rented until buying their own farm in 1948, near Grand Saline; and WHEREAS, An independent woman throughout her life, Mrs. Hitt attained her driver's license in the 1960s, continued to drive until 1998, and still owns her red sports car; and WHEREAS, Since 1979, she has lived in a home on property owned by her daughter and son-in-law, Chloee and Tom Flournoy, and she continues to display her trademark independence; and WHEREAS, The family's designated "queen of fishing," Mrs. Hitt caught eight fish on a recent outing with a granddaughter; her avid interest in sports is particularly focused on the Texas Rangers and the Dallas Cowboys, and she proudly displays in her living room a football that was autographed by Roger Staubach; Christmas is a favorite time of year for this inspiring woman, who values God, her family, hard work, honesty, self-reliance, and a desire to make the most of each day; and WHEREAS, For 100 years, Eunice Exa Hitt has lived a full life, and she continues to share her affection and delightful sense of humor with a wide circle of loved ones who cherish her company; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby congratulate Eunice Exa "Nannie" Hitt on the centennial of her birth and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mrs. Hitt as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
