H.R. No. 64 


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The El Dorado Club of Kingsville has been serving its community for nearly 50 years, providing social activities for area residents and offering scholarships to college-bound students; and WHEREAS, Established in 1957, when segregation was still in effect, the El Dorado Club served as a venue for an array of social activities not readily available to Hispanic students attending Texas A&I College; and WHEREAS, Founding members Leonardo Leal, Ben Martinez, Oscar Cabra, Jr., Willie Garza, Manuel Rosales, Ricardo Castillo, Juan Rocha, Jr., and Sonny Mascorro overcame numerous obstacles to establish the club and organize the first annual gala for graduating high school seniors, an eagerly anticipated event that continues to this day; and WHEREAS, In its first year, the club grew to include members Arnoldo Adame, Leon Avelar, Salvador Ochoa, Jose Enrique Mendietta, Ray Rosas, Martin Garcia, Juan Garza, Angel Herrera, Milo Garcia, Tanis Guerra, Gilbert Graves, Humberto Garcia, Eliseo Lozano, O. J. Rodriguez, Felix Rodriguez, Juvenal Rocha, Armando Soto, Carlos Truan, Armando Salazar, Xavier Valdez, Rosendo Garcia, Hector Herrera, Roy Torres, Nick Valdez, Raul Rosales, John Bradley, Lauro Lopez, Ramon Ruiz, Manuel Narvaez, Israel Guajardo, and Arturo Gallegos; and WHEREAS, Club members met in 1969 to plan the club's first Debutante Ball; each year during the Christmas season, young ladies who are pursuing higher education are introduced to the community and presented with the El Dorado Scholarship; through the years, the El Dorado Club has assisted more than 500 young women by providing them with scholarships to the college of their choice; and WHEREAS, The El Dorado Club continues to have a significant impact on the Kingsville community through both its scholarship offerings and its volunteer activities, and the many individuals who are associated with this venerable organization are indeed deserving of high praise for their exemplary contributions to their fellow citizens; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the past and present members of the El Dorado Club of Kingsville and extend best wishes to these noteworthy individuals for continued success in all their endeavors; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the club's members as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
