R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Mineola Monitor recently won a third-place award in the 2003 Better Newspaper Contest, a competition sponsored by the Texas Press Association to recognize outstanding achievements in journalism and newspaper publishing; and WHEREAS, Established in 1876, the Mineola Monitor has been in continuous service to the Wood County community for more than 125 years; providing coverage of local events, schools, sports, businesses, and government, the paper has flourished under the direction of a highly capable team that includes publisher Joyce Hathcock and editor Doris Newman; and WHEREAS, the Monitor received third-place honors for feature story writing and presentation in the Division 7 category, which included a total of 26 medium-large weekly newspapers, and earned high marks from the judges for its two submitted feature articles; "Boys and their Toys," written by Gary A. Edwards and designed by David Chenault, was named "a great package of detail-laden vignettes"; Doris Newman's article, "Faith, family and friends keep Mikey and Sheeran family going," featuring paste-up and graphics by Brenda Wheat, chronicled the courage and spirit of a family coping with terminal cancer; and WHEREAS, Newspapers are vital to the development of an informed citizenry, and the staff of the Mineola Monitor has made lasting and invaluable contributions to the Mineola community; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby congratulate the Mineola Monitor on its award-winning performance in the 2003 Better Newspaper Contest and extend to its staff best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the Mineola Monitor as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
