R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, On July 1, 2003, Cleve Freeman retired from his position with the Southern California Gas Company, drawing to a close an illustrious career in business that has spanned nearly 35 years; and WHEREAS, This Conroe native is a graduate of Booker T. Washington, where he served not only as senior class president but also as the captain of the basketball, baseball, and track teams; following his graduation in 1965, he attended Prairie View A&M University and later moved to California to pursue further professional development and to establish himself as a manager of note in the energy industry; and WHEREAS, In 1987, Mr. Freeman embarked on a secondary career as a reserve officer with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) and today works as a community relations specialist, fostering improved communications between the force and the Hispanic and African-American communities; a two-time recipient of the LAPD Reserve Officer of the Year award, he was the first cochair of the 77th Precinct Community Police Advisory Board; and WHEREAS, Mr. Freeman has given generously of his time and resources to promote positive change in his community; in addition to cofounding Hyde Park Organizational Partnerships for Empowerment (HOPE), he helped launch the first youth soccer program in South Central Los Angeles and today works with the American Youth Soccer Organization as a regional commissioner and National Development Commission board member; he has been profiled by CNN, Nightline, and The Wall Street Journal, and he has spoken at numerous conferences and events around the world; and WHEREAS, This outstanding individual has truly made the world a better place in which to live, work, and raise a family; having retired from the world of business, he now looks forward to writing new chapters in his extraordinary life; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby congratulate Cleve L. Freeman, Jr., on the occasion of his retirement and extend to him best wishes for continued happiness and success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Freeman as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
