H.R. No. 111


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, On July 27, 2003, businessman Joe Garza is commemorating the 10th anniversary of Lone Star Publishing, the company he founded in 1993 that publishes the Mid-Valley Star for the communities of Edinburg and Edcouch-Elsa; and WHEREAS, Born in Nuevo Leon, Mexico, Mr. Garza immigrated with his family to Edinburg in 1965 and spent much of his childhood working as a migrant farm laborer in fields across the United States; he later served as a field radio operator in the United States Marine Corps, First Marine Division; and WHEREAS, This hardworking Texan joined the Elsa Police Department in 1979 before attending the Harlingen Police Academy, where he graduated with full honors and earned his law enforcement certification; he went on to become a deputy constable for the Delta area, serving citizens in the communities of Edcouch, Elsa, La Villa, La Blanca, Monte Alto, and Hargill, and, continuing his education, completed additional training in civil process, accident investigation, narcotics investigation, and firearms instruction; and WHEREAS, Ten years ago Mr. Garza, recognizing the need for an independent and locally owned Hidalgo County newspaper, boldly embarked on a new professional path by launching Lone Star Publishing, and on July 27, 1993, the first edition of the Mid-Valley Star rolled off the presses; over the course of the past decade, the paper has earned a loyal and appreciative readership and the support of the Hidalgo County business community; the success of the Mid-Valley Star, which is widely read throughout the cities of Edinburg, Edcouch, and Elsa, has also directly assisted local chapters of the American Heart Association, Boys and Girls Clubs of America, and Veterans of Foreign Wars, as well as the Edcouch-Elsa Lions Club, an organization Mr. Garza served as president in 2000; and WHEREAS, With the unwavering support of his wife Janie Gonzalez Garza and his three children, Cassandra, Ismael, and Sarah, Joe Garza has truly helped to make lasting and invaluable contributions to the South Texas community; Representative Aaron Pena has justly recognized this exemplary individual by passing this resolution in his behalf during the 78th Legislative Session; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commend Joe Garza on his many significant contributions benefiting the Lower Rio Grande Valley community and extend to him best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Garza as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
