R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Mansfield News-Mirror recently won the Division 5 sweepstakes title and five additional first-place awards in the 2003 Better Newspaper Contest, a competition sponsored by the Texas Press Association to recognize outstanding achievements in journalism and newspaper publishing; and WHEREAS, Established in 1883, the Mansfield News-Mirror was the oldest weekly newspaper in Tarrant County before it adopted its current format as a semiweekly; it has been a part of the Knight Ridder family of publications for three years, and the paper is currently in the hands of a highly capable team that includes publisher Lance Winter, managing editor Brigitte Cummings, sports writer Mario Zavala, Jr., staff writer Mark Wright, advertising manager Michael Eddleman, office manager Sharon Knowles, production manager Daniel DeHart, and production assistant Melissa Englert; and WHEREAS, The News-Mirror received top honors for general excellence in the Division 5 category, which includes semiweekly papers with circulation figures of 4,000 or less; the paper also earned first-place finishes for headline writing, photography, page design, and sports coverage, and its notable record of success is a testament to the talent, professionalism, and dedication of the News-Mirror staff; and WHEREAS, Newspapers are vital to the development of an informed citizenry, and the staff of the Mansfield News-Mirror has made lasting and invaluable contributions to the Mansfield community; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby congratulate the Mansfield News-Mirror on its exemplary performance in the 2003 Better Newspaper Contest and extend to its staff best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the Mansfield News-Mirror as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
