R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Columbus community lost a distinguished citizen and cherished friend on June 30, 2003, when Maynard Livingston "Tex" Rogers passed away at the age of 60; and WHEREAS, Born on December 7, 1942, in Houston, Mr. Rogers graduated from Calhoun County High School, where he was named to the National Honor Society and selected as all-district tackle in 1959; he attended Texas A&M University on an athletic scholarship and played football for the Aggies from 1960-1962 before transferring to Texas Tech University in Lubbock; and WHEREAS, On November 22, 1963, Mr. Rogers married the love of his life, the former Sally Shepard, and their special union was blessed with two sons; they also proudly watched their extended family grow to include three grandsons; and WHEREAS, A 40-year veteran of the newspaper business, Mr. Rogers began his career in journalism in high school with the Port Lavaca Wave, and during college, he was employed by the Avalanche Journal in Lubbock; working over the next four decades as a reporter, editor, and publisher, he garnered valuable experience at the Quarter Horse Journal in Amarillo, the Houston Post, the Texas Horseman in Houston, the Victoria Advocate, the Jackson County Herald-Tribune in Edna, and the Shiner Gazette; and WHEREAS, Mr. Rogers moved to Columbus with his wife in 1992, to manage The Colorado County Citizen, and on February 17, 1993, he joined a group of local citizens and the Citizen Publishing Company, Inc., to purchase the paper; as publisher and editor, Mr. Rogers reorganized The Citizen and made the paper into an award-winning publication; and WHEREAS, After retiring in September 1998, he continued to be involved in the media as a sportswriter for The Citizen, as a contributor to the KULM Radio news department, and as a publicist for the Columbus Convention and Visitors Bureau; and WHEREAS, Throughout his career, this esteemed journalist remained active in numerous professional organizations; he served the South Texas Press Association as director, contest chairman, second vice president, first vice president, and president; he also was a Texas Press Association director and belonged to the Texas Gulf Coast Press Association and the National Newspaper Association; and WHEREAS, Mr. Rogers earned many awards over the years, including the United Press International Spot Sports Award and two consecutive National Newspaper Awards; most recently, his sports reporting for The Citizen helped the paper to win first place in sports coverage in the Texas Press Association 2003 Better Newspaper Contest; and WHEREAS, In addition to being a respected and accomplished newspaperman, Mr. Rogers was a beloved citizen who readily volunteered for community service; he worked for the Nesbitt Memorial Library Advisory Board, the Live Oak Festival Committee, and the Terquasquicentennial Committee; furthermore, he supported the 4-H club and taught Level 1 Basic Archery through the National Archery Association of the United States; and WHEREAS, A big fan of music, especially Texas music, he organized and promoted the annual Shelly Lee Alley Tribute in Columbus; also an avid genealogist, Mr. Rogers belonged to the Lindsay-Crawford Clan, and he established the Southwest Texas Scots in 1999, a publication that serves Texans seeking to trace their Scottish roots; and WHEREAS, The loss of Tex Rogers has deeply saddened his many friends and family members, but his spirit will continue to live in their hearts and through the lasting positive influence he had on the community; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 1st Called Session, pay special tribute to the life of M. L. "Tex" Rogers and extend deepest sympathies to the members of his family: to his wife, Sally; to his sons, David Nicholas Rogers, and his wife, Tamara, and Travis Livingston Rogers; to his three grandsons, Nathaniel Rogers, Lindsay Rogers, and Rowan Rogers; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Maynard Livingston "Tex" Rogers.
