R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Residents of La Grange are mourning the loss of Richard L. Barton, Sr., the owner and former editor and publisher of The Fayette County Record, who passed away on June 21, 2003, at the age of 78; and WHEREAS, Born in Hominy, Oklahoma, on April 23, 1925, Mr. Barton graduated from high school in 1943; that fall he entered the United States Army and he served in the 82nd Airborne, 325th Glider Infantry, during which time he earned a Purple Heart and Bronze Service Arrowhead; and WHEREAS, When he returned from the military, this esteemed newsman earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Oklahoma in 1949; after working on newspapers in Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, and Missouri, he purchased The Fayette County Record in March 1976, and after many years of successful publication, he retired as its managing editor and publisher in 1988; and WHEREAS, A member of the Rotary Club for 45 years, former president of the Rosenberg Chamber of Commerce, and active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in La Grange, Richard Barton will be greatly missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of the many people whose lives he touched; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of Richard L. Barton, Sr., and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife of 56 years, Nelda; to his son, Richard L. "Dickie" Barton, Jr., and his wife, Nonnie; to his daughter, Regina Keilers and her husband, Armin; to his six grandchildren, Stacy Barton, Richard L. "Trey" Barton III, Tanya Keilers, Tara Keilers, Toni Keilers, and Todd Keilers; to his nieces and nephews; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Richard L. Barton, Sr.
