R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The retirement of Janie Cockrell of Corrigan on August 31, 2003, brings to a close a law enforcement career spanning 27 years of superior service to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice; and WHEREAS, An alumna of Sam Houston State University, from which she received a bachelor's degree in criminology and corrections, Ms. Cockrell began her career with the state prison system in 1976 as a correctional officer at the Goree Unit in Huntsville, which then housed women offenders; during the ensuing years she also served at the Gatesville Unit, the Powledge Unit, and the Beto I Unit, and her responsibilities encompassed serving in social services, working with special needs offenders, and supervising counselors; and WHEREAS, Ms. Cockrell was named a regional director of the institutional division in 1994, and two years later she was promoted to deputy director for support services for that division, in which capacity she oversaw statewide systems related to community relations, food service, laundry, and inmate classification; in 1997 she was chosen as deputy director for the division's security component, and since August 2001 she has served as director of the institutional division, which operates 73 prison units housing more than 130,000 offenders throughout the Lone Star State; and WHEREAS, In retirement, Ms. Cockrell happily anticipates participating in a family ranching enterprise in the Corrigan area and spending time with her wide-ranging circle of loved ones, including her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Cockrell; and WHEREAS, Janie Cockrell has served the State of Texas with integrity and dedication, and she has been an inspiring role model for all those who have been privileged to work with her; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commend Janie Cockrell for her impressive career with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and extend to her best wishes for a happy and fulfilling retirement; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Cockrell as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
